There´ve been haters
since this world been going ´round
(nothin but love, nothin but love)
Why they take a thing and try to crush them down
(nothin but love, nothin but love)
I ain´t even trying to hold on to that now
(nothin but love, nothin but love)
Ain´t got nothin but love for you
(nothin but love, nothin but love)
What can I say? I must admit I have become addicted to
Whitney Houston’s CD, I Look To You. Of course, people would love to compare
the current voice to the old voice. Of course people want to analyze what they
think they know of Whitney’s life. Of course people want to talk about this and
that but the bottom line is the bottom line. And the bottom line is this –
Whitney has chosen music that is current and that is appropriate for her age
and her voice. Whitney’s voice has changed but over the course of almost 25 years but whose hasn’t. And then there are the undisputable facts…
The stars must be
aligned tonight
I believe this has to have a meaning
With over 170 million combined
album, singles and videos sold worldwide during her career with Arista Records,
Whitney Houston has established a benchmark for superstardom that will quite
simply never be eclipsed in the modern era. She is a singer's singer who has
influenced countless other vocalists female and male.
Music historians cite Whitney's
record-setting achievements: the only artist to chart seven consecutive #1
Billboard Hot 100 hits ("Saving All My Love For You," "How Will
I Know," "Greatest Love Of All," "I Wanna Dance With
Somebody (Who Loves Me)," "Didn't We Almost Have It All,"
"So Emotional," and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go"); the first
female artist to enter the Billboard 200 album chart at #1 (her second album,
Whitney, 1987); and the only artist with seven consecutive multi-platinum
albums (Whitney Houston, Whitney, I'm Your Baby Tonight, The Bodyguard, Waiting
To Exhale, and The Preacher's Wife soundtracks, and My Love Is Your Love).
In fact, The Bodyguard soundtrack
is one of the top 10 biggest-selling albums of all-time (at 17x-platinum in the
U.S. alone), and Whitney's career-defining version of Dolly Parton's "I
Will Always Love You" is the biggest-selling U.S. single of all-time (at
4x-platinum).
I was not built to
break
I got to know my own strength
Are these the best songs that Whitney has ever sung –
probably not. Are these good songs – definitely. What is best about the songs
is that good, fair or whatever, Whitney brings depth and feeling to each one of
them. I Look To You will undoubtedly
become one of those songs sung in churches across the country and will probably
end up being “the” song used to audition on the next season of American Idol ad
nauseum. I Didn’t Know My Own Strength
is the other power ballad that Whitney sings and it is just one of those
dramatic, almost over the top songs that you can’t help but love. And Whitney is singing. Try to find someone
who can sing runs and not overdo it. Whitney is the master.
For the old schoolers, For The Lovers does the job – a dance song for people Whitney’s
age. For the next three minutes throw your hands up. And that is what you do for the entire CD.
Whitney is back. And as she says, for all the haters in the place, I ain’t
singing to you. But then again she proves that she’s got Nothin’ But Love.
